Meet the Team

Rick Lazzeri

Owner-Winemaker

A lifelong Bay Area resident, Rick married Lillian, his high school sweetheart, raised a family, and spent 34 years as a commercial electrician. He enjoys drinking wine, making things from scratch, and a good puzzle. While winemaking started as a hobby, it’s no wonder the complexities and science of growing grapes and turning them into wine became a passion. Rick has spent the last 20 years learning the land, soil, and plants and mastering the processes of producing red wine. He also attended UC Davis, earning the Winemaker Certificate in 2015.

Rick does all aspects of the grape growing and winemaking processes himself. He also used his mechanical skills to build much of the equipment utilized in the winery. In the spring, you can find Rick in the vineyard planting new vines and pruning last season’s growth. Summer brings soil management and monitoring plant growth and health. The busiest time of year is fall with harvesting and crushing, cellaring and finally preparing this year’s wine for aging.

“The best part of the whole process is seeing people enjoy something that I created!”

The Vineyard

Lazzeri Vineyard grapes are grown on two pieces of land outside of Murphys and San Andreas. Our first small vineyard of syrah, zinfandel, and barbera was planted in 2007. Additional syrah vines were added in 2009, while primitivo and more barbera were planted in 2013 and 2016.

We strive to grow our grapes in harmony with the beautiful landscape of the Sierra Foothills. About half of our land remains as natural habitat to support local flora and fauna. Vineyard practices, such as efficient watering and limited chemical applications, reduce our impacts.

The red wine from Lazzeri Vineyards is exceptional; truly an unforgettable experience for any wine lover.

We love this wine and we love the folks that make it!
